1. Better controls. I like shiny graphics, but I figure the better controls will make it easier for me to enjoy, and frankly, I don't need my graphics to be cutting edge to have fun. As for load times, I play World of Warcraft, where load times are very rare, so it is a factor, but I can live with load times as long as they're not every fifteen seconds.

2. Nope. I'd prefer monogamy, to be honest.

3. People will feel good about themselves and not buy products to ease their paranoia! Clothes are also pretty convenient for cold weather, too, and its just the done thing to wear them most of the time.

Really? Don't you also play bass? I like the sound of bass guitars much more than the sound of regular guitars. But then again, guitar in general is such a vanilla instrument, perhaps second only to piano. Doesn't mean such instruments can't sound fantastic in capable hands, but still... they're too ubiquitous for me to want to take the time to master. Plus, I'm a lot more impressed by beautiful sounds coming from more unusual instruments.

1. It depends on the music. The good stuff deserves to be turned up to 11.

1. Polygamy is not frowned on by all cultures. Mostly just the western ones. Christianity and modern Judaism espouse binary marriage because it fits their more Apollonian ideals better, and keeps bloodlines simple for political purposes, as well as simplifying inheritance to some extent. Children by multiple wives (or through multiple husbands, assuming matriarchy, which we haven't seen in the western world for so long, there is virtually no record of it ever having been) creates a great deal of potential in-fighting.
Personally, I believe this was more of a problem back when married couples were encouraged to have many children (infant fatality isn't as prevalent in modern society). In modern families, where there are rarely more than two or three, and most children are expected to grow up and go on to do their own thing, rather than go into the family business, it seems much less problematic to me. But I still don't expect to see polygamy legalized in my lifetime.

Yes, I play bass, and I enjoy great bass playing as well. There are just far fewer examples of truly exceptional bass playing. I can name quite a few more guitar players whose music impresses me than I can bass players.

Well, I certainly wouldn't start devising Rube Goldberg devices to do what I can do much more efficiently by jumping in and doing it by hand or with a perfectly reasonable and effective tool. The key I would simply jump down and grab when no one was looking and no train was approaching. That train track wasn't that far down. Even a magnet on a string makes more sense. If there's fear of a third rail, just get something non-conductive like a wooden tong or chopsticks to pick it up. No need to be fishing flotation devices out of the canal.

While I'm not one for slut-shaming, I'm also wary of overly idyllic views of ancient Greek society. Things weren't necessarily all perfect and wonderful "until those stupid prudish Christians came along and ruined everything". Particularly not for women...

1. No. I like music to be loud enough for me to hear clearly, but once it turns earsplitting, I get cranky. Yes, even if it's music I like.

It's the same thing though; only women have been dragged through the mud for a lot longer! Of course that matters but when all's said and done it's just the way capitalism works and will always work; glamourise everything, make people endlessly want said glamour until they buy into it all. Celebrity culture, Sex in the City, music videos, lifestyle magazines, the fashion world, fragrance adverts, did I mention Sex in the City? The sooner people, not just women, realise this the sooner we can all just put away this broken record and get on with being real and not harbouring such anxiety about ourselves. I don't think this sort of cultural oppression will falter nearly as much as we hope because there are too many people chasing the dream with their pockets.

My apologies if I'm coming across harshly but this sort of stuff really gets me going

Having said all this, the whole Jade Raymond fiasco really pissed me off and revealed just how pathetic many male gamers really are. I do agree with what you're saying but I just think 'public property' sounds a bit mawkish and not a phrase I'd expect from someone introducing a site like the Border House! Anyway, for fear of derailing this thread feel free to pm me, I'd love to hear your thoughts on all this patent nonsense

1. A week ago I was at this vile party masquerading as a bar mitzvah celebration, which is apparently par for the course in America now. 1. I'm not sure I do calm myself down. I think I languish in it until it naturally goes away. I suppose in the past I have been known to go to sleep which sort of resets my senses.
2. I don't really try to cheer myself up either. I think I just let it all out, try to understand and accept it then try to move along. Failing that, again, I go to sleep.
