The PS2 tech demos were running on a PS2. Of course no PS2 games surpassed them, games have to do a lot more than tech demos, tech demos get to play with all the power. Tech demos don't have to account for looking in multiple directions, the demo maker knows where he's going to point the camera.

Some people are fooled by cheap trickery, and base their judgement on taste rather than examples of power. The worst thing about the emotion engine hype was the promises of Toy Story like graphics.

Perhaps history, technical knowledge, and common sense. They're not all tech demos either, some are prerendered videos passed off as gameplay videos.

History tells us the PS2 actually surpassed the demos we were shown. Technical knowledge tells us that the PS3 is one hell of a beast, and when taken advantage off will show us some impressive stuff. Common sense tells us that since the first and the second are in favor of the PS3 living up to the demos, there's no reason to doubt this.

How long was it since you saw the PS2 demos? I've played plenty of games with better graphics than that. Only thing anti-sony people have for "proof" is one little comment regarding Toy Story graphics. One single comment being the single reason for not living up to the hype? That's just desperate.

Looking at the demos vs even recent PS2 games, can we really say they surpassed them? Seriously... look at the polygons and the texture quality, not the artistry and trickery.

How about the animation? 1, 2, 3.

Seriously, you can't see how the PS2 equaled or even in some cases surpassed in these shots?

Gran Turismo 2000 (the PS2 trailer) vs Gran Turismo 4, for example. GT4 looks much better. I even think the polygons are higher on GT4, and the overdone shine on the trailer is very badly done.

Also, the Ridge Racer face and the old-man face. These are examples of what can be done if you only have these two on the screen, and if you check out Ridge Racer V, you can play around with the Ridge Racer girl in realtime, if I remember correctly.

Go further down and you'll find a picture comparing a middle-aged man from Silent Hill 3 to the old-man picture. Now add to the fact that the whole body is rendered and animated in real-time in SH3, plus the background, while the tech-demo is only the face.

Here: http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/a...302/play16.jpg vs http://image.com.com/gamespot/images..._screen006.jpg

While I doubt the SH3 face has 100,000 polygons, I get your drift.

It's good texture and modelling art, it doesn't reflect on the power. The face has a lot more polygons, and is animated too, using those polygons.

The face in the tech-demo is JUST the face, while the SH3 screenshot is a lot more than that. If you removed everything but the face in SH3, I'm sure they could've made it as good as the tech-demo, if not better. You gotta look at the screenshots in context.

EDIT: Let's compare Gran Turismo 2000 to Gran Turismo 4 now.

Gran Turismo 2000 (what we were promised): http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/a...302/play14.jpg
Gran Turismo 4 (what we eventually got): http://z-o-g.org/imgs/misc/gt4-1.jpg

How anyone can say that the PS2 didn't deliver is beyond me.

Well,

You don`t have to compare jpg`s with eachother.

If you all don`t believe ps2 his horsepower, check out these titles.
(Because i dont even think you played them to know on what you talking about !)

- Final fantasy 12
- Rogue Galaxy
- God Of War
- Kingdom hearts 2

Look at all those animations. All those details !
More stunnier then the XboX ever was !

I Love the Playstation 1,2,3 and everything with comes after.
The company is very innovative in delivering outstandig extras.Check these games out !

- Eye toy
- Guitar hero 1+2
- Buzz games

Face another truth ...

PS offers free network multiplayer play !
further more on the ps3 prices...

To get a even system as the ps3 , you need to upgrade your xbox360 with WiFi adapter ,HD-DVD add on, Wireless controllers and even BATTERY PACKS !

on the end your paying the same as an PS3.

Im a 30 year old gamer, followed all the consoles.i played them all.
From c64 to Ps3.
Still my heart lies on the Playstation platform and nintendo DS , an also very innovative System.

Xbox has his back support on american people, who loves them country, who loves them own Microsoft.. They have always been like that..
check all the American sites.. Full of PS3 hate stuff..
Its all because americans are bad.. selfish people (not all of them).

This is my euro cents on this item.
Open up all your eyes Dudes !

Here in Europe we will Wait for us Sony black box , if it even will come in DEC 2007.. it doenst bother me. I still know what i will get, when i buy the console.

And that sony lies... SO WHAT ?? to gain more sells ?? WHY NOT ?
Did george bush never lies ? did bill gates never lies ??
Everyone will throw up a lie sentence to gain more sells, EVERY BIZZZ DOES >> DUDES

WAKE UP goddamned !

Anyways have all a nice gaming 2007 and all the luck on our new consoles.
For me its not a console war. for me there is already a winner , even its not yet built (ps4). simply put.

This is nothing new for sony, they've been doing this a long time ago with vaios, back in the days of windows 98. And that makes it a very bad idea, this'll give people traumatic flashbacks. Just imagine windows 98, aka dos in drag, running on sony hardware. Yeah, it was as bad as it sounds.

Revenue is irrelevant...its all about profit, assets and market value. MS is far "richer" if you will than Sony, despite Sony's greater revenue.

As for this latest discussion about tech demos vs final product, I hope the proponents here dont include those prerendered CG movies as "tech demo's". As far as actual realtime demo's, nothing Sony showed for the PS3 is unattainable...but those prerenders most definitely are.

When all is said and done, when both consoles are 'settled' into the market and developers are familiar with the tech, the difference in graphics is going to be negligible. The only thing that matters, that a lot of people are finally realizing, is that its all about the exclusives that makes a console 'better'.

Dont forget how well the Wii is doing and how much fun people are having with a dramatically inferior technology. Dont forget the PS2 we all cherish was inferior to both the Xbox and the Gamecube technologically, yet had the best exclusive games, so technological superiority obivously is completely irrelevant.

The PS3 at current count has only two substantial exclusives out or coming out in the launch window with Resistance and Motorstorm, and those aren't killer apps. I'm hard pressed to name any games coming out in the next 6 months even that would encourage as PS3 purchase for me before Xmas 2007. By all means if someone has a list of quality exclusive PS3 games, post them, as I sincerely dont know of any.

Cheers

Well, yeah, that may be right. But I'm not so sure just yet. After all, what we see in these pre-renders now might not be so impressive in five years time, and I know the PS2 has shocked me more than once, and even as late as God of War. I was genuinely shocked and astonished by how much power the PS2 really has. So, yes, I do believe it's too early to tell. If history is anything to go by, we won't know before five years or so.

So, I'll stick to the "let's wait and see" way of thinking for now. Motorstorm might not have been even remotely as good looking as the pre-rendered trailer, but it's still VERY good looking, and it's still only a first generation PS3 title. And after all, the PS3 launch titles have at least as good graphics as the Xbox 360 second generation titles, so that's a good sign.

Eventually, it's all about the games. It's become a cliche now, but too many people are forgetting that. While I already have an X360, I'm still more interested in the PS3, because I pretty much know that the PS3 will have more titles that I'm interested in. I'm not very much into shooters and "pc-games", but I'm much more interested in japanese style action/adventures. So far, the X360 hasn't impressed me much, 'cause the so-called game of the year is a shooter (Gears of War), and while it's a good game, it's extremely overhyped. If the graphics weren't so good, people wouldn't be raving about it so much. Good game, but nowhere near a classic - yet it scores like one.

An even more multifunctional machine than you thought it was. Still arguing about your money's worth or what!?

Oh, and tech demos are gimmicky. They do just that, showing the raw graphical power with applications running in an environment rarely (more like: never) found in actual games. Remember Remedy's 3DMark2001, for instance. The Matrix meets Max Payne lobby scene. To which a guy from Remedy immediately said that it wouldn't compare to the performance of the actual (then upcoming) Max Payne game. No AI and stuff to calculate. For showcase purposes only.
