I just finished NOLF (GOTY edition with the two extra missions/levels) and I have to say I haven't had as much fun with a game in a long time. The over-the-top accents and dialogue between the H.A.R.M. agents and the scientists are often hilarious, and the level designs are loads of fun. Well worth the $5.00 I paid (came with strategy guide).

Okay, so this is old news I know, but I'd never really played an FPS to any degree before. I installed NOLF2 last night and my eyes popped out at the gorgeous rendering. The difference between this and the first game are amazing! More attention to detail is emphasized, and the characters are smoother - anti-aliasing making an obvious difference. Can't wait to get deeper into this one.

Having said that, this has prompted me to purchase a few more FPS along the way. Such as Chaser, Chrome, Unreal II: The Awakening and of course Half-Life. My new graphics card has just broadened my choices. Any suggestions for any really good FPS that seem to focus on a good story/adventure?

If you're willing to deal with RPG aspects, the original Deus Ex, System Shock II and the Thief series are all excellent FPS games.

Undying is pretty decent too.

If you are interested in TPS games, there are the Max Payne games.

Of course, this brings up the question of why there is such a shortage of 2nd person games...

For a good scare, try the Alien Versus Predator games, especially the first one. I never dared finish it...

i thought the medal of honor games were pritty good, but i got tired of playing it halfway threw. call of duty is an other good game

call of duty, UT is the god of fake guns, but if you want realism get call of duty.

Counter strike is good if you like cheap graphic"y" games

Call of Duty is really cool, I mean ... there's lots of dramatic battle moments in it, but the story is extremely fragmented and ... plain irrelevant, really. Call of Duty has got a pretty good atmosphere and at times pretty exciting gameplay, but don't play it for a great plot or anything.

I haven't played any other FPSes recently besides Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. That game is pretty much my standard FPS multiplayer game

Tron 2.0



Tom, Thief: The Dark Project (as Bard suggested) is truly challenging (I haven't yet played Thief II: The Metal Age, so can't suggest it yet). Thief pretty much turns the FPS on its head, you sneak and steal rather than run and gun. It should keep you on the edge of your seat and make sunlight (or any light source) your enemy. The story is told through cutscenes in between missions. The difficulty is noticeably varied - on higher settings you are not allowed to kill any persons.

As for Deus Ex, I can hardly find enough superlatives to describe my experience with it. I've stayed up nights just exploring the deep gameworld and talking to everyone (who always have something to say). The level of interactivity would make the collective adventure game genre shrink with embarrassment. This game is all about choice within the boundaries of the story.

In addition to all the other good FPSs everyone else recommended, try Tron 2.0. Again, it's not like a typical FPS, at least visually and stylistically. It plays a tiny bit like Deus Ex, a simplified version of it in the RPG area. The story is shown through in-game cutscenes (just like NOLF and NOLF2), and the visuals are absolutely fantastic.

Finally, have you even played Half-Life?

I also agree with Tron 2.0 its an unique game. I should also add that it was made by the ones responsible for the No one lives forever series. There's also a new game in the Nolf series: Contract Jack, never played but the reviews weren't that good and we don't get to control Cate Archer...

But my suggestion is of course : just play half-life first

I'm the exact opposite; I never played the first one (heard it was too difficult), but I LOVED the second one. Scared the pants off of me.

I'm a Quicksaver, and I was quicksaving every 5 seconds because I was so worried that aliens were going to break down a wall and throttle me. Then you finally get to PLAY as one...

Definately a recommendable experience.

You want story? Half-Life actually does have a story, albeit a simple clichéd one. But never mind that, it's the way in which you experience the story that's really fun. You'll see. (I seriously need to kick most adventure game devs' asses - hard - for failing to look into other genres to see other narrative possibilities) Also, when you finish HL you'll need to get the second chapter of its 'interactive fugue', Opposing Force - the same story but experienced through the eyes of another character, one of the marines sent to clean up Black Mesa. And then, after that, you just have to pick up Blue Shift, the final end of the fugue - same story, but this time you'll play Barney, the ubiquitous security guard you kept running into in HL.

Optional advice: Try and procure Blue Shift before you play HL so you can install the "....'High Definition Pack', a graphics upgrade for Half-Life, which adds visually enhanced player and weapon models. The models, and their respective animations, contain double the amount of polygons over their original versions -- and best of all, it'll also upgrade all the weapons and models in Half-Life and Opposing Force too!"

Oh, and see if you can find the original demo for Half-Life. It features a level that's not in the full game. Impressive, yes.

i was never big on halflife, it was a good game, i beat it. there are to many people out there who are obsessed with it. i always hated the realy long intro

i am awaiting HL2 thoe, i played the hacked closed beta and found it interesting, i think that the release of the beta helped valve somewhat, they have more loyal fans even before the game was officialy released

My favourite FPS recently is Call Of Duty. It has a level of immersion that I haven't seen in another FPS, and it was great fun to play.

Anyway, 2004 is probably the year of FPS, its incredible the number of fps coming this year... HL2, Farcry, Doom3, Painkiller, Thief3, Psychotoxic, Shadow of chenobyl, Xenus,new medal of honour,etc,etc,etc,etc and Duke Nukem Forever, of course...

hmm where to start...
lets start with multiplayer: Return to castle wolvenstein: enemy territory the best teambased multiplayer out there for as far as I'm concerned It's free, it's fun, and it's not all about superfast reaction times

single player:
NOLF, which you're already playing
NOLF2 is definately a cool game, play it right after you finished NOLF1
Don't bother with contract J.A.C.K sadly it doesn't live up to the expectations of NOLF2 and has only one cool mission in it

Halflife, just buy the 'halflife generation' pack and you got halflife, plus the 2 singleplayer addons you want to play, blue shift and opposing force.

Do Not Bother with Unreal II unless you want to throw away a bunch of money. sadly this game also doesn't live up to his hight expectations...

Medal of Honor: Allied assault is also a very nice game, although the story relies a bit too much on scripted events. But the D-Day landing is one of the most memorable fps experiences I ever had

Deus Ex 2: awesome title: go play!

Systemshock 2: deus ex on overdrive. the only game that manages to scare me every time I try to play it (No I actually never finshed it :/ )
Cool feature is the co-op function they added later with a patch. I still want to hold some kind of SS2 marathon and play the entire game with a few people in one weekend



Then we arrive at Tron 2.0 this is a beautifull FPS which uses the same engine as NOLF2 and look simply stunning, just check trep's screenshots for the proof

other noteworthy titles to mention here are:
- hitman 47 (thirdperson, but super cool)
- hitman 2 ( sequel which irons out most (if not all) flaws from the previous version)
- splintercell (also thirdperson, but such awesome looks & gameplay it's a must play title )

I'm fairly new to the FPS Genre, but the first game I ever played was Doom II, and that was years ago, when I was still young. However, I played FPS games last year, that were absolutely entertaining. Here are the games I played, and I absolutely recommend that you play them.

1. No One Lives Forever 2: No One Lives Forever, and it's sequel, are two of the best games I've ever played. The sequel's even better than the first. You are free to choose how you want to play. Go in like Rambo,and just gun every bad guy you see, or be quiet and stealthy. The voice acting is hilarious, also. Plus, the lead hero, Cate Archer, is so beautiful, and very tough, too. She's basically a female James Bond.

2. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: You have to do absolute stealth in the game, but the graphics are gorgeous! You are also free to sneak up behind bad guys and take them hostage. Then either use them as human shields or knock them out after you've interrogated them. Really cool game!.

3. Tron 2.0: It's got a few frustrating spots in it, but this is a fun game, and it is absolutely a true sequel to Tron. Bruce Boxleitner, and Cindy Morgan who acted in the movie are back for the sequel, and Rebecca-Romjin-Stamos lends her voice to the hero's sidekick in the game. The graphics are gorgeous, and very colorful.

Those are my recommendations. Also, check out the demo for Call of Duty. It was very intense, and realistic. I never much cared for Half-Life, because I felt it was all action, and no story. But, that's my opinion of course.
