Unexpected. I'm sure glad I downloaded and backed up all the games I bought from them. Talk about abrupt. I agree, if it's a stunt it's not a particularly good one. Absence might make the heart grow fonder, but no one likes to be toyed with. I suspect GOG wouldn't do that either, though, and this is for real. It's too bad. Their site was a thing of beauty for fans of old games.

Seems to me they are going against their main principle and will adopt DRM

And they know it will bring much dispute so "working site and service with DRM" will sound better when compared to "not working at all" in costumers minds.

I hope i'm wrong though, and GOG deserves all the praise for their past work and bringing attention upon old gems.

I have to agree that, from what's on their site, this does appear to be a stunt and I have no idea why they are doing this.

However, if they still sell good old games DRM free for such good prices then I will happily continue to buy from them!

First of all, we apologize everyone for the whole situation and closing GOG.com. We do understand the timing for taking down the site caused confusion and many users didn't manage to download all their games. Unfortunately we had to close the service due to business and technical reasons.

At the same time we guarantee that every user who bought any game on GOG.com will be able to download all their games with bonus materials, DRM-free and as many times as they need starting this Thursday.

The official statement from GOG.com's management concerning the ongoing events is planned on Wednesday. If you want to receive further information about GOG.com, please send an email to update_media@gog.com if you're a media representative or to update_users@gog.com if you're a user without a GOG account.

The rumour seems to be that they're moving to a stand-alone client like Steam.

Do you guys honestly think that after 2 years of selling their service as "DRM FREE" that they will add DRM? I can't see it happening.

I hope that if it does have some sort of Steam -type thingy, one doesn't need to download that on thursday or whenever when we can get to downloading the games we bought. Wow, check out the video, and pause it at 0:12. It appears that they're adding Baldur's Gate! Hopefully it will be DRM-free - if so, I'll buy it in a heartbeat even though I own the CD version already. And dare we hope for Planescape: Torment?

I had the same reaction, although I couldn't watch all nineteen seconds, I just turned it off. A beloved site shuts down immediately, without warning and locks out paying customers with some 'wasn't it a great time!' guff.

How about some fucking mea culpa there GOG... "Sorry we didn't warn anyone we where in the shitter..."

Instead we get "its not you, its us..." and 19 seconds of our drunken, shotgun wedding video followed by an invitation to your bachelor party!?

GOG is coming back, apparently better than ever. It wasn't bought out, and all games will still be DRM-free and client-free.
