How to play old games on newer Windows?

Hi, I felt like playing my old RHEM game on my laptop with Windows Vista and I used the compatibility option and changed the monitor res to 640x480 under the game Properties. I then went into Display settings to change my screen res and it won't go that low, so I don't know what to do.

The game still runs but the playing area is very little. Is there some way to get
around this problem?
