That might be another thing. For so many people, FFVII was the first console RPG they ever played, so it was this huge new thing (and admittedly, it is a fine example of the genre). In my case, I'd already played through the other three American-released Final Fantasy games (Mystic Quest and the FFL games don't count, but I played those, too), the first four Dragon Warriors, Chrono Trigger, Lufia I & II, Lunar I & II, Earthbound, the Phantasy Star series, Wild ARMs, and a myriad of others. If we include PC RPGs, it'd be too many to count. So when FFVII came out, for me it was a prettier, more fleshed-out version of what I'd already seen before. I preordered it months in advance, started playing it the day it came out and loved it, but a good deal of it was familiar to me already (especially Sephiroth, whose appeal has always eluded me). So I never quite got the hype, and I've always seen it as "the one that got big" rather than the best one.
Even though I still do love it, warts and all.
