What is 'tilt' ?

My understanding is that it's the personal tilt that a reviewer gives to a game for indefinable qualities.

For example, if a reviewer attempts to objectively score a game a game's components, the individual scores might end up averaging X out of 10. The reviewer might feel that the game is actually better or worse than X, and will assign a high or low 'tilt' value to signify that.

Gamespot use it. Kind of a strange system in my opinion.

Makes sense to me, although it's really just a bolted-on attempt to make sense of the mad de-facto game reviewing system of assigning a score to every conceivable aspect of the game. A modern game can be more or less than the sum of its parts, just like a film or a book can. When was the last time you saw a book getting a mark out of ten for "Typesetting"?
