I don't think it was shallow, either.
![]() Especially not when compared to other games of the time. It had a varied set of rather imaginative weapons, each with a secondary mode of fire, great level design, light puzzles, competent enemies (sometimes too competent), memorable and well thought out boss battles... Sure, the only thing that really stood out was its art design, but I wouldn't say the gameplay was boring or shallow.

I've just started playing it (I borrowed it from my neighbour) and it seems really good. The artdesign is breathtaking like already stated in this thread. Nice that you can also talk to the characters you meet. Although based on the small part I played it seemed a little linear and repetative. But I have to play more to know for sure if that is the case.

I also love this game, but more for the artwork than the gameplay itself
BTW, did you guys know that there is going to be a movie based on the game? The movie will be released next year and stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Alice! Although I'm a big fan of SMG (HOT!), I don't think she is the right person to portray Alice. We'll see what happens...

Silent Hill was very forgettable and not particularly good. Flashy, but no substance. In other words, another MTV generation horror.

I don't know if you played the game(s), but the atmosphere was just right. The siren wailing, the crackling sounds of the radio, the first encounter with Pyramid Head, the janitor! It all worked!

I've played all but SH4 and I don't think the atmosphere was right. The town in the movie was like a huge gothic ruin, in the games it's more like a present day city - which is exactly what made it creepy in the first place - and not as decayed (except when the Otherworld kicks in, of course). I appreciate the effort, but it doesn't make it a good movie.
