You can choose a graphic filter in the main menu. It's pretty awesome.

Yes, it's just a filter that can be applied through ScummVM, it's not like a separate "mode" of Sam and Max specifically.

Yeah, it should but it usually works best on cartoonish style games like Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max.

Games with higher resolutions (like CMI or Broken Sword games) doesn't need it, they are better without it imho.

The graphic filter on the Sam & Max screenshot is the "Super2xSai" filter (I think). It looks a lot better than the simple blur-filter which is applied automatically when using the scummvmgl.exe file. Use this command line (create a DOS batch file or use a Windows PIF file):

scummvm -f -gsuper2xsai -p[path where the game is stored] samnmax

I usually also add the -ewindows parameter, but this is very dependent of what kind of MIDI sound card you have. The command allows the game to use the default Windows MIDI device to play MIDI music, instead of the emulated Adlib music. If you have a card with good General MIDI sounds, the result can get much, much better. Actually, a SoundBlaster Live card or something like that will do just fine, it will at least sound better than the software-emulated Adlib music.

Then the command line should be something like this:

scummvm -f -ewindows -gsuper2xsai -pd:\samnmax\ samnmax

Hope this helps! ScummVM is indeed a great, great tool, and even better if you take the time to experiment with parameters like these, to find the "ultimate" configuration for your tastes.

Myhrik, it might be a good idea to edit that post and disable smilies so that your instructions are more clear.

EDIT: Ah, I'm too late, you totally did it. Excellent.

I always play the games in 'pure mode'

I just love those pixellated graphics, I really do

The one thing I do like is the Windows general MIDI option. Music is much, much better then it was on my old PC or with Adlib emulation.

With scummvm 0.6.0 you really don't need to deal with the command line like that, there's a tab in the settings for each game, under the "edit game..." button I believe, where you can chose the graphics filter.

That one in the screenshot is either supersai2x or it might be the new hq2x (i dont really know??), and aspect ratio correction is turned on, which is awesome, especially for sam and max, dott, and full throttle, all of which look really squished when you have correction turned off...

I use HQ3x, i'm guessing that stands for high quality 3X. i run my PC in 1024X768. the box that the game plays in is almost like widescreen. it's looks really good

I still muddle about with graphics filters, trying to find the "perfect' one for the game.

The biggest problem for me, however, was getting proper MIDI working. I can't STAND FM synth, but the sound drivers that I was using didn't support wavetable MIDI, so I had to grab, compile and figure out how to configure the proper ALSA module drivers.

Then Linux kernel 2.6.x came out, with ALSA built into the kernel, and I had new headaches. I puzzled it out, though. In hindsight, I guess that it's like one of those frustrating adventure game puzzles where you hit yourself for not seeing the solution all along once you figure it out.

You know... The real deal would be to get a hold of these old Roland MT-32 sound cards, the golden standard in those good old Monkey Island years... Just to hear how the music was *really* supposed to sound... (at least in MI2 and Fate of Atlantis...) But... *thinking* those cards probably don't have Windows drivers or anything... So you'd have to run them in DOS instead, on an ancient computer. Hmm. Or - maybe there is some cool site on the net which have software versions of these old cards for download?!? Anyone?

OH, I didn't know at all about those setup screens, Jake!! Thanks! (Goes to download new ScummVM version)

Pfft, the Amiga's Paula sound chip all the way!

Anyway, as for the MT-32 emulation, I saw this project mentioned on Slashdot a few months ago - Roland were suing them. Sound familiar?! Anyway, apparently that's all straightened out now, so you're free to download both a Windows driver and a version of Dosbox with integrated MT-32 abilities. But to use the software you'll need to find a copy of the original MT-32 ROM - so good luck with that!
