It's always looked really cool when I saw it in trailers and such and I would love to give it a try someday, but alas, I'm not a console owner nor do I plan on being one any time soon. I hope it will still be around if and when I am capable of getting one.

It is an adventure. It follows a story. All sites list it as an "adventure". But I'm shocked there are soo few fans for such a great game.

Let's see

Ign says it is an action-rpg http://dreamcast.ign.com/objects/014/014499.html
Gamespot says it is a modern action adventure http://www.gamespot.com/dreamcast/ad...tech_info.html
Gamespy says it's an action,rpg,adventure http://archive.gamespy.com/reviews/d...01/shenmue2dc/

So not all of the sites say it is an "adventure" it seems hmm

I love the Shenmue series, I have played them over constantly. I hope shenmue III will be made one day though it's doubtful at this point but hey they are making shenmue online . Shenmue can't really be classed as any Genre though it definitely has aspects of an Adventure game.

Solid Snake you have picked one of the coolest videogame characters in history as an avatar, so I regret differing in opinion.

I’d say by modern standards Shenmue could be considered very much an adventure game.

Okay, so it does have combat. But so does Dreamfall.

Also it does have those Simon-Says press-the-correct-button sequences. But you find those in Fahrenheit as well.

And I’ll admit there are stealth sections. But you get those In Broken Sword 3 too.

Finally you could say that it IS a console title, but then Dreamfall, Fahrenheit, Broken Sword 3 and Syberia have all appeared on console formats as well.

Other than that it’s all exploration, conversation, following leads and a few object-based puzzles. You could argue it’s a slightly more linear Dreamfall, with poorer dialogue, bigger locations and vastly better action sequences.

Although, given that Shenmues 1 & 2 represent chapters 1-5 of a supposed 27 chapter odyssey it’s probably not much more satisfying than Dreamfall upon completion.

To be honest I’d highly recommend it to anyone. It does look a bit graphically dated now, especially when you put it up against visual showpieces like BS3 and Dreamfall. However, there’s a sense of place, of adventure, of exploration and revelation that few other games of any genre manage to achieve.

A few points to look out for though:

1) Shenmue 1, while debuting at the time what was a fantastically vast world and engine and gameplay system is quite small, and the ending is something of a disappointment. The series was billed as being a Japanese teenagers search in Hong Kong for his father’s killer. At the end of Shenmue 1 Ryu is only just getting onto the boat to go to Hong Kong.

2) If you’re buying Shenmue 2, try to get a European Dreamcast system off eBay and a European copy of the game. This version was released with the original Japanese dialogue and “subtitles” rather than an American dub. This works much better as the voice acting is AWFUL in Shenmue 1, and the US X-Box release of Shenmue 2.

3) The combat and physicall challenges are VERY demanding, with combat alone being on a par with the Tekken series. If you’re not into action elements then definitely give it a miss.

Other than that I’d have no problem recommending it to anyone as a good game or as an interesting curiosity.

Well in my opinion Fahrenheit isn't an adventure game either (by the way Shenmue is the pioneer of the push the right button at right time as it's first used in this game). I insist Shenmue isn't an adventure but something different in its own right. Of course it has some aspects of adventure but it isn't an adventure game The developer of the game,Yu Suzuk, defines the game's genre as FREE which stands for Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment. Imo ıt is an action rpg with some feeling of adventure. Oh and thanks for your comment on my avatar

If the general rule of the forum is that Dreamfall is an adventure, then Shenmue should be considered an adventure as well. The two are rather reminiscent of each other.

Shenmue was the reason I bought a Dreamcast. While in the end it's unsatisfying, it's still very enjoyable.

Yeah... You're right. I didn't play a game called Dragon's Lair 16 years before Shenmue was released that had the same exact thing. (DL probably wasn't the first either BTW).

Oh, and Shenmue seemed like a great game, but I had the Japanese version for my import Dreamcast and the inability to understand the dialogue prevented me from wanting to finish it at the time...

Shenmue is Not an RPG:

http://www.gaming-age.com/cgi-bin/re...t&game=shenmue

^ read for yourself. RPG's have Stats. Like for exmaple Pokemon where you have to raise the level of your monster to win. That's RPG, Shenmue doesn't have any of that. RPG is when you have to raise your fighting/shooting/power skills, such as in Fable. Shenmue is different.

"Action" is Halo. Where you go through the whole game with little to know story line and all you do is fight and shoot. The first level of Halo... There is no storyline, and the fighting is non-stop until you finish the level. In Shenmue there are no more than 20 fighting scenes. As with Halo, every corner you turn is fighting. Halo is driven be Action. Shenmue is driven by story. The whole point to Shenmue is the story. The whole point to Halo is the killing. That's why it's an adventure... See for yourself...

http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrank...reviewid=40782

To Pilman and the rest of the guys...

Since where was no Shenmue Online at E3... and there were rumor that Shenmue online was cut due to the cost... But it seems the Yu Suzuki has moved on from Shenmue

______________

No Plans For Shenmue III?

German gaming website www.gamefront.de claims that in a recent interview with Yu Suzuki the Shenmue creator confirmed that he has no plans to develop Shenmue III at the moment.

He did however recognise the massive demand for the game and mentioned that he would like to direct it.
www.gamefront.de

Shenmue Online Still In Production!

In a recent interview with IGN Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki confirmed that despite unfounded rumours Shenmue Online was still in production and slated for a '06 release.
"Moving on to Shenmue Online, which was recently rumored to be cancelled due to development conflicts, Suzuki is quick to assure: "reports of a halt in development are completely unfounded. We have daily meetings and are currently working hard on the game's development. Rest assured." Shenmue Online is currently in development in Taiwan as a massively multiplayer Online title where players are placed in the world of Suzuki's Dreamcast epic, Shenmue. The game is set for PC release in early 2006."< 2006 is over :'( Sorry guys... Guess we'll never get our Shenmue :'

As for the endings... Shenmue 1's ending was GREAT !!!! It left you wanting More... You can feel Ryo's pain, his thurst for Dan Li. It was a great ending to a continueing story. As for Shenmue 2's ending... One word... Crap. They should have ended it with the defeat of the last boss. The whole walking with the girl, thingy, was cool and all. But no point to it. I don't want to give away the ending... But it leaves with the question "What ?". They don't finish the game, or the chapter of Ryo and the girl. When you expect something huge to happen... The game ends. But than again. Most of adventure games have a bad ending. Syberia 1's ending was beyond GREAT. Syberia 2, again, left you with "What ? What happens next ?." They just don't finish the game... Still life, that samething the game isn't finished. Broekn Sword, on the other hand... It great. I didn't finish BS3... I'm working on it, but as far as I got. It's a GREAT game. So much thought was put into it. Everything has it's place.... Just a Great game. The samething goes for BS1... GREAT game !!!! I never played BS2 It came out on Playstaion 1, and I got the N64.

There are things I like about Shenmue and I praise them highly to anyone who'll listen. There are also things that suck about it, I don't mind the quick time events so much, so long as they aren't overused as a time extending device like they are far too frequently in Shenmue II. Nearly everyone bitches about the book airing, for example.

I would never be abie to definitively box Shenmue in a single genre, its probably one of the difficulties in enjoying/recommending the game. It does a lot of things fairly well, rather than a few to perfection. It certainly has RPG elements in my opinion. You DO build your stats and raise skills in it. At least you *can* and should if you wish to be a better fighter. Which is essential to completing the second game since the later battles require some degree of fighting mastery.

So rather than collect and train pokemon, you collect and improve moves. Which you can then use to good effect in the battles. The parallels seem pretty strong to me. As far as it being an adventure, those 'puzzles' that aren't combat related, are 99.9% dialogue driven. And you don't get to pick what to say in Shenmue so much as you just have to figure out who to speak to and when.

The only really adventuregame like puzzles/obstacles in Shenmue II that redily come to mind right now are cleaning the temple walls of soot to find the names of the four Wude and following a woman through the streets of Kowloon from the bird sanctuary to her apartment.

To me, Shenmue should be put into a genre called "Super-Adventure".
It's almost like a perfect adventure game to me.

No. The worst part was the last boss. I died like 5 times before winning him. The quick system thingy was HARD. If you made one mistake, you lost. and then you'd have to start all over again. The books were easy.

I've won the whole game and not once did I see the stats never did I ever train. The point is what the game was built on. Was Shenmue built on RPG, on. Was it built on action ? Yes... But not all that many. Was it built on a storyline ? YES. The story is the whole game. It's what Shenmue was built around. Take away the RPG from Shenmue and the game will make it. Take away the fighting away from the Shenmue and the game will only be puzzles. Take away the storyline from Shenmue and you take away the game, it's self. Just as if you took away the fighting from Halo you would have no game. Just like if you took away the training from a Pokemon game... In Shenmue everything is secondary to the story. Making it an adventure, with some elements of RPG and Action.

Quote:

That's not what I said. I was just comparing.

Quote:

And you have you find items as well. Like the book. Which involve searching/exploring.

Well... In every adventure you should be able to ask people for help. It happens in all the games. You get stuck. So you ask the people around you to help you out... But you still have to make the cup sign yourself, you still have to follow maps/people yourself, and you still have to find people and shops yourself. Plus there are small puzzles like "what key to use for the elevator... ?" The Buddah statue was a puzzle too.... There was many little puzzles in the game.

Solid: Thank you, but I wish I wrote it. As a matter of fact, I can't even write. But if you go to "Gamerankings.com". They have a "review" section for each game. On the headline you have only famous review sites. Gamespot and IGN... Along with them is Gaming Age. It's a famous site, it been along for a while now. Of course you can judge a site by it's reviews. So judge for yourself.

I only played through a bit of Shenmue, but what I did get through I adored. I love the detailed environments to go through and explore. The only real drawback for me was the lack of a free floating camera, as there were some objects that I wanted to get a closer look at, but were placed too far below the line of sight.

I understand there is some fighting later on, which is unfortunate and may turn out to be a game killer for me, which is a pity.

This is one of those games I'm pretty sad I'm so against consoles about, why doesn't it come out for PC?
